Alan L. Bess, MD


Alan L. Bess, MD is President and CEO at American Health Systems Corporation and is responsible for strategic direction and operational execution. He is a senior pharmaceutical executive with 28 years of demonstrated success in Drug Safety, Pharmacovigilance, and Risk Management. He is a leader in the field of Pharmacovigilance, and an FDA-recognized expert on Drug Safety; a high-energy executive with a commitment to quality and a proven track record of building high performance Drug Safety organizations. Since his appointment he has focused on growing the organization through a renewed commitment to strong client relationships, high-quality service, and exceptional project management.

Dr Bess served as a member of the PhRMA Clinical Safety Surveillance Committee (1994-2008) and participated in the Regulatory Affairs, Health Care Reform, Drug Safety Life Cycle Steering Committees. He served as a member of the Drug Safety Executive Council and the Pharmaceutical Education & Research Institute. He has written numerous safety-related articles, abstracts, letters, and editorials for medical and industry journals. Prior to joining American Health Systems Corporation, Dr Bess was Vice President and Head of Clinical Drug Safety & Epidemiology at Novartis (2000-2008), Vice President and Head of Drug Safety at Hoffmann-La Roche (1994-2000), Drug Safety Section Head, Hoffmann-La Roche (1988-1994), and Head of Drug Safety & Medical Affairs at Abbott Laboratories (1982-1988).

Dr Bess obtained his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine. He did his postgraduate medical training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and the Albert Einstein Medical Centers in Philadelphia, PA.
